Downtown Dance Factory News
DDF Does Jump NYC!
Last weekend, over 75 dancers from Downtown Dance Factory particpated at the Jump NYC Convention and Competition. Over two days, dancers from six to sixteen attended class after class in jazz, lyrical, contemporary, ballet, hip hop, tap and musical theater with amazing choreographers like Mia Michaels, Misha Gabriel, Andrew Winghart, Al Blackstone, Wildabeast, Mike Minery, Colby Shinn and more! And at the competition, our Lyrical Company Senior, small groups and soloists did us proud! What a fabulous weekend, and an inspirational experience for all!
DDF competed at Groove last weekend
This past weekend, Downtown Dance Factory's competition troupes spent the weekend at Groove Long Island, our first competition of the 2017 season. We saw a little of everything from our DDF dancers as they performed in genres ranging from Ballet, Lyrical and Contemporary to Jazz, Musical Theater and Tap. Large groups, small group, and solos alike, our dancers did us proud! One of the high points was being awarded the Groove Long Island Choreography Award. We also received the highest marks of the entire competition for Large Group Jazz and Large Group Musical Theater. A huge congratulations to our dancers and our choreographers. Well done DDF!
Jazz Companies Violet & Orange perform pregame at the Barclay Center
Downtown Dance Factory has certainly been getting to know Center Court at the Barclays Center. This week it was Companies Violet and Orange who did us proud! Dancing to Knock on Wood (Violet) and Bohemian Rhapsody (Orange), both groups put on quite the show for the pregame crowd ar the Brooklyn Nets vs Miami Heat game. Ten of our dancers were then selected to sing the national anthem on the court with the basketball players! Quite the night!
Jazz Companies Red & Green Take the Barclays Center
On Sunday, Jazz Companies Red and Green rocked the Barclays Center at the Brooklyn Nets vs Toronto Raptors NBA game. Dancing Center Court at the pregame show, both Companies wow'ed the crowd with their amazing dances. Company Red was amazing, skilled (and adorable) dancing their Rockin' 60s routine. And Company Green was sophistocated, smooth and just plain awesome dancing to Rumor Has It. They both made their teacher, Hanne, super proud, not to mention all their adoring fans in the audience. If only the Nets had pulled out the win ... next time Nets ...!
Our new DDFPlay class for Tots is off to a Play-filled start!
DDFPlay, Downtown Dance Factory's brand new program for 12-36 month olds, launched this week and it was a huge success! After our monthly free StoryDance Playgroup was so popular and led to requests by participants for MORE of the same, we introduced DDFPlay. DDFPlay mirrors StoryDance - it fuses dance, stories, song and craft - but it does so in a weekly session and with a smaller group which allows for extra attention to each and every child. Miss Vicki and Miss Molly had a blast with their "Play" kids - singing, dancing, crafting and reading. And when it was over, it was hugs all around - no one wanted to leave, including the grown-ups! For more information on DDFPlay, click here. It's not too late to join us!
Company Yellow Rocks Center Court at the Knicks Game!
On Friday night, DDF’s Jazz Company Yellow gave a fantastic pre-game performance center court at Madison Square Garden for the NY Knicks vs Charlotte Hornets NBA game. Dancing to Meghan Trainor’s hit, “Me Too”, and outfitted in cool sequined basketball jerseys, the 18 dancers aged 12-16, rocked the iconic stadium with a super sassy strong performance. Well done girls! We are so proud of you!
Demo Classes are in Full Swing at DDF
Demonstration classes for the Fall 2016 Semester began last week, and wow - what a sight! All our dancers, from the tiniest TutuTots to our teenagers, are putting on quite the show for their parents and friends. Demo classes are a great opportunity for parents/caregivers/friends to see what your dancer has been learning all semester. There is so much talent right here among our very studio walls! Demonstration classes continue for 2 more weeks until the end of the semester. And then, as the Winter/Spring Semester begins, we start gearing up for ... RECITALS 2017!!!
Adult Classes are on Fleek at DDF!
Why let the kids have all the fun? How about their grown-ups, many of whom watch them week after week through the viewing windows into the studios? It's our turn on the inside of the studios and grown-ups have been showing up this week in droves to show off their moves in our all new Adult Class Line-Up! On Tuesday, Hanne's Jazz class rocked the dance floor to "Wikked Little Girls". On Wednesday, Jasmine's Dance Cardio dancers worked up quite the sweat! Today, we had a full turn-out in Jess' new Ballet Tonic class, where we tendu'ed, balance'ed and arabesque'ed our way around the studio, all while getting in an amazing workout. Don't miss tomorrow ... Zumba with Kelly! You're sure to leave with a smile. This is our new line-up, Tuesday through Friday every week. Join us! It's your turn to have some fun!
Our first StoryDance Playgroup was a huge success!
On Wednesday, Downtown Dance Factory hosted our very first FREE StoryDance Playgroup, and we had so much fun! We welcomed over 40 kids and their parents and/or caregivers into our new 4th floor space. Activities were separated into the three studios. For Story Time, Hanne read the Nutcracker to a very captive and interested young crowd, and then kids and their grown-ups were free to read books on their own. For Craft Time, beautiful tiaras and crowns were created with stickers and crayons and loads of imagination. And for Dance, we had a blast! Miss Vicki, Miss Molly and Miss Amelia led the crowd with dancing and jumping and moving and singing. Scarves were waved, shakers were shaken, bears were cuddled. It's not clear who had more fun ... the kids or their grown-ups!!! We were only sorry it had to come to an end. But we'll see you again next month for our next free StoryDance Playgroup on Wednesday January 4th!
